From September 1, 2025, compulsory education will apply in Slovakia to children of foreigners, including children who have been granted refugee status.

If a child arrived in Slovakia before January 1, 2025, they must be enrolled in school as of September 1, 2025—education is compulsory for them. If a child arrived between January 1, 2025, and August 31, 2025, the parent/legal guardian should apply for enrollment in school within three months of September 1, 2025 (i.e., no later than December 1, 2025). If the child arrived after September 1, 2025, the parent/legal guardian has 3 months to apply for school enrollment.

If both the child and their legal guardian are foreigners and do not have permanent residency in Slovakia, apply for temporary asylum as a legal guardian: first, fill in the electronic registration form for temporary asylum on the website of the Ministry of the Interior of the Slovak Republic. Then come in person to the foreign police department or to a large-capacity registration center.

If a child does not reach the age of 5 by August 31 before the start of the school year, they are not required to attend pre-primary education, but you can decide to send your child to kindergarten. Kindergartens are open to all children, not just those of employed parents.

Applications for admission to pre-primary education are submitted between May 1 and May 31. A child may also be admitted during the school year if the kindergarten has sufficient capacity.

Children are admitted to kindergarten on the basis of a written application submitted on the Application for Admission of a Child to Pre-primary Education form. As a legal guardian, you must submit: a completed application form (with information about the child and legal guardian) and a certificate of medical fitness from a general practitioner for children and adolescents. If the child has special educational needs, also attach a confirmation from a counseling and prevention facility and a confirmation from a pediatrician.
